Date What's New or what has been added

May 28 2003 Added a photo of Klemm Kl 35 SE-BHD which will hopefully be restored to static condition. Roberto Romano contributed a photo of the cockpit of the Fiat CR 32 at the Italian Air Force Museum.
May 17 2003 The airworthy Tante Ju population continues to increase in Europe! :-) The latest addition is the CASA 352 T.2B-142 with Svedinos Bil och Flygmuseum, Slöinge, Halmstad, Sweden that took to the air a few days ago for a last "flight" in to the newly constructed hangar. So from now on it will be kept indoors together with the other aircraft that also have saved from the harsh conditions outside!

A photo of the semi restored Klemm Kl 35 SE-BGA of the Arlanda collection have been added courtesy of Jan-Ĺke Berg. Jens Klank addad new photos of Fw 44J D-EMMI and CASA 1.131 D-EGBM.

May 10 2003 Luciano Bertolo contributed a photo of Avia FL.3. I-ADOA. Thanks!
May 3 2003 Hervé, Benno, Jean-Pierre and Benjamin have all reported about the succesfull first flight of the Salis CASA 352 at La Ferte Alais a few days ago. It was the first flight in twelve years for this aircraft. It will be a great addition to the European warbird scene. Now we've got some 6 airworthy Junkers Ju 52/3ms in Europe, may be it's time for a formation flight!?

Per-Řivind Skarphol have contributed some improved photos from the Italian Air Force of the Caproni-Campini, The SM 79 and the Macchi MC 200 on show. He also writtes in that the current ebuild of the museum is well on its way, with Hangar 3 currently receiving attention. The Cant Z506S is currently outside, stripped of paint and waiting for a new paintscheme.

From Gregory Alegi and GAVS in Italy comes some photos of a few preserved Avia FL.3. I-OPES, I-BIOU and I-AVIG.

Ola Carlsson sent in new photos, including a shot of the cockpit of the NC 701 SE-KAL preserved at Arlanda Airport in Sweden. Many thanks to all of you for these updates!

April 26 2003 Hervé Da Silva reports that the Salis CASA 352 at La Ferte Alais has taxied on the 23rd and that the first flight is scheduled Sunday.

Thomas Siepert contributs several photos of engines from the engine collection of Deutsches Museum Munich: BMW 132, DB603, Jumo 004, Schmidding 109-513, a section of a Walter 109-509 and the ultra rare He S8A jet engine.

April 20 2003 Henning Poulsen added a photo of Bf 108B-1 W.Nr 1561 in flight a couple of years ago.

Hervé Da Silva sent in some very interesting photos of 5 of the Ju 52/3ms stored at Museo do Ar outside Lisbon, Portugal. They have been very elusive and difficult to get photos of. Another elusive aircraft that Hervé sent a photo of is the sole preserved Heinkel He 46 in storage with Musee de l'Air in Paris. It would be nice if i could be restored and put on display. Great additions from both of you, thanks!

13 April 2003 Henning Poulsen wrote in with additional information regarding the Bf 108B-1 W.Nr 1561 currently up for sale in Denmark at EUR 200.000. Last flown in 1995. A photo has now been added of it.

Dirk Lombard added a detailed photo of the antennae installation on the Fw 190A6/R6 preserved in South Africa. I've also added a photo of the brand new BMW 801 engine in store at Gardemoen in Oslo for the Norwegian Fw 190 project. The engine has never been used and must be a "wet dream" for many Fw 190 projects. :-)

Angel Sanchez reports that Fundación infante de Orleans at Cuatro Vientos airport in Madrid recently have acquired a Fw 44J for their collection. Photo and identity of aircraft will be added later on when known.  Many thanks for these updates!

April 5 2003 Dirk Lombard sent in two photos from South African National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg of a BMW 003 and a Piaggo PXR engine which is preserved with the collection.
March 30 2003 Andreas Keller reports from Hamburg that he has seen several signs of the spring arriving! The first engine runs of Lufthansa's Ju 52/3m this year was conducted on the 26th. First flight after the winter sleep is scheduled for the upcoming week.

The wings of their Bf 108 has been reattached and this aircraft will soon again take to the air. Progress on the Fw 200 Condor is steady, with one landing gear completed. The aircraft will probably be completed as a civilian Fw 200 and it will take many more years before the restoration is finished.

Jean-Luc Soullier reports that the Siebel Si 204s previously listed with Aero Phoenix in France are not there anymore due to the death of the owner. One example has gone to Czech republic as reported earlier. But the whereabouts of the others are not clearly known.

Brian Nicklas contributed a photo of the newly painted He 219 of NASM. I can't wait until it is re-assembled! Brian writes the following regarding the painting process of the He 219: "Heinkel He 219 was recently moved to the paint booth and given a coat of primer, the grau-violett was shot on the fuselage, then the grau-grun "squiggle" was shot. A pattern of the original camouflage was made as the original paint was removed (it had reacted with the US Army Air Forces overpaint with time and could not be saved, except where it was not overpainted at the wing roots - that was preserved on the airplane) The Garber team first laid the pattern back on the a/c with plastic, punched holes in the plastic and they shot "dots" thru with an airbrush. Then they removed the plastic and connected the dots with the airbrush. Then they went back and resprayed with the wider airgun, giving that "German look" to the pattern. Next the black belly was shot. The mylar pattern sheet was then used to lay out the "high line" for the lower sides and bottom black. This high line was then laid in on Wednesday with the airbrush. The mylar was also used to help provide a soft mask for the top of the aircraft as the black was shot, to help prevent blow-back and over spray in the tight confines of the spray booth from settling on top of the fresh grau-violett and grau-grun. Yesterday (Thursday) the black was shot on the lower areas of the fuselage and the lower sides, from nose to tail. It simply looks great. If all goes well, the rear national insignia cross will be painted on soon, and the canopies have been put into place."

Many thanks all of you for the contributions!

March 22 2003 Marco Fernández-Sommerau Contributed a some information and a photo of his Fa 330 W.Nr. 100010. Whats very interesting with this information is that the Fa 330 listed in the Salis collection with W.Nr. 100010/2 has another, unknown W.Nr. Every rotor blade was marked with the machines W.Nr and a /n where n was the number of the rotor blade. So the blades for a Fa 330 was numbered /1, /2, and /3. Thus the rotor blades could be kept with the correct machine. This procedure is described in the the excellent book Helicopters of the Third Reich by Coates. Included with the machine Marco has are one blade from W.Nr 100549 and two blades from 100032. So Salis example have been wrongly identified as W.Nr. 100010/2 so W.Nr for that machine is currently unknown.

Roger Soupart added two photos of the Bf 109G-5 in Holland, including a photo of the cockpit.

Brian Nicklas contributet a photo of the transmission from Fl 282V15 that is preserved with NASM. It has recently been restored and will be put on display at the new Udvar-Hazy Center in 2004. He also sent a photo of a previously unlisted Fritz-X bomb that can be found in the missile section. I think that we can expect more exciting finds in the storage areas of NASM in the future. The inventories of the museum have been computerized and are more easy to search. Brian have promised to send photos of the He 219 which recently have been repainted. We're looking forward to that!

March 15 2003 Jean-Pierre Touzeau reports that Salis CASA 352 at La Ferte Alais is nearing the end of its restoration. The first engine runs are expected in two weeks and the first flight is planned for April. We're looking forward to seeing it back in the air again! A new photo of it during restoration have been added.

Peter Cohausz contributed cockpit photos of the HA 1112 at Musee de l'Air, the Bf 109E in Munich and the BF110G at RAFM Hendon.

Many thanks for these additions!

March 8 2003 Gregory Alegi contributed a photo of the Italian Air Force Museums second Nardi FN 305 which is in storage. The wings are missing.

I've also added a photo of an interesting garage project from Gothenburg in Sweden. It's Klemm Kl 35 SE-BHF which is currently under slow restoration to airworthiness.

March 1 2003 Tom Woodhouse contributed a photo and some information on Kermit Weeks Italian Nardi FN 305 trainer in UK. The aircraft is currently storage awaiting a major rebuild since it hasn't flown in many years. During previous storage the aircraft have suffered from woodworm.

We continue to examine and research Timo Savolainens photos from Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo's storage hangar and make new discoveries. The staff at the museum has been very helpful and patient in dealing with our queries. We've now identified a wreck in the background of a photo to be a VL Viima trainer. The museum hasn't had an example of that trainer as listed it's collection previously. So far we don't have an identity or history attached to the airframe but hope to add it later on. Apologizes for the quality of the photo.

A new subsection to German engines have been added called "preserved foreign engines in German service". (did I just cross a line here for what is socially acceptable as a "spotting" hobby? :-). Anyway it is to good not to list and show a photo of the overhauled Soviet Klimov M105P with German ID-plate. The engine was captured by Germany, overhauled and then sold to Finland.

Mario Raguž added a photo of an Italian propeller preserved at Tehnicki Muzej in Zagreb, Croatia. It has been identified as being from an Italian twin engined aircraft, most probably from a Caproni CA 133, 309 or 310.

February 22 2003 Philippe Osché have contributed a photo of the elusive Spanish Buchon HA 1112 C4K-162 now under restoration in UK.

Oliver Canon sent in an update regarding the DFS 230 preserved in France including a photo taken during 2002 of the airframe under restoration at Musee de l'Air in Paris.

From Gregory Alegi comes a photo of the third preserved Savoia SM 79 which is in storage with the Italian Air Force Museum. Wouldn't it be a good idea to trade it with Spain since they'd have the motivation to spend the money and resources needed to bring it back into its full glory?

Mario Raguž have made an interesting discovery of a monument in Kostrena, ca 2-3 km from Rijeka in Croatia. It's a propeller from a Arado Ar 196 recovered from the sea and mounted on a stone. It can be seen on the relics page. Mario also sent in information regarding a dig made on a Fiat BR.20 that crashed on 31JAN1943 in a hill (Sisol) at the village Brsec, close to the town Lovran. It was from 113 Eskadrila and the crew of five perished in the crash. The recovered remains doesn't count as a preserved example, thus it won't be listed on this site but I want to share the photos with you in this news section. Hopefully these parts could be integrated in a future Fiat BR.20 project. Photo 1, and 2.

Alan Scheckenbach writes in to tell that the Australian War Memorial in Canberra are re-assembling their Bf 109G (a photo of the fin have been added) to put it on display. When that is done, they'll start with their Me 262.

Thanks for these great updates!

February 15 2003 In this update we continue with the exploration of the Finnish treasures. This time Timo Savolainen have contributed photos of the Finnish Hawker Hurricane from when it was on display in the Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo several years ago. It is now in storage on a Finish Air Force Base and not accessible. Timo had the possibility of visiting a storage hangar of the museum some years ago and took a photo of the fuselage frame of Fokker C.X FK-113 as well as a photo of VL Pyry II PY-35 also in storage. A photo of the rear fuselage frame of a VL Myrsky fighter have been added too. An updated photo of Messerschmitt Bf109F-4 W.Nr. 7108 has also been uploaded. A photo of a second preserved Bristol Blenheim turret have been added at the Finnish relics section. An improved photo of the preserved Bf 109E wings in storage at Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo have been added.

Mike Henniger send in an improved photo of the USAFM CASA 2.111 in storage as well as a photo of that museums Mitsubishi A6M Zero under restoration.

February 8 2003 Peter Vercruijsse sent in new improved photos of Messerschmitt Bf 108 D-EBEI, Bücker Gomhouria (Bü181) D-EEXE and Klemm Kl 35 D-ECCI.

Volker Pelz added photos of the manned Fiesler Fi 103 (Re 4) missile and one of the Fi 103s with Musee de l'Air in Paris. It is probable that the later example was on show in a temporary exhibition and have been removed again.

Brad Pilgrim had the opportunity to visit Connie Edwards facility in Texas several years ago and took the following photos of some of the Messerschmitts (Hispano HA 1112) in storage there. The Messerschmitts used in the film Battle of Britain sometimes changed codes during and after the filming which makes it very difficult to identify the aircraft with 100% accuracy. But to the best of my knowledge, and with the co-operation of Peter Cohausz the photos of the following aircraft have been added: C.4K-61, C.4K-99, C.4K-105, C.4K-106, C.4K-112, C.4k-126 as well as Harold Kindsvater's C.4K-169, Richard Hansen's C.4K-105 and CAF's C.4K-31. In one photo, three aircraft are seen, one (Yellow 9) is labelled as C.4k-126 and the other two is believed to be C.4K-99 and C.4K-106. But which is which can't be determined. Also the photo listed as C.4K-61 is not 100% confirmed. If anyone can confirm or correct the identities of the airframes in the photos that will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks for the contributions to this update! Look out for some new interesting photos and information from Finland in the next update.

February 1 2003 Bert Koopman have added photos of several V2 engines preserved in the Netherlands. There are three engines (one of which is cut up to show the inside) with the Leger en Wapen Museum, Delft as well as one engine with the Dutch Army Explosive Clearing Command.

Philippe Kerangueven writes in to tell me that there are still some substantial remains of the Do 24 aircraft recovered in the early 80's and then believed to have been scrapped. Nose section preserved together with three BMW 323R engines and some sections of the tail unit is preserved with l'association des Amis du musée de l'Hydroaviation.

Andrew Usoff writes in to inform me that Bf109F-4/Z W.Nr 7504 is under restoration in Moscow to flying condition. A photo have been added. May be this is a first sign that Russia have moved from being a source of aircraft projects through a country with skilled restoration companies working for foreigners to actually having a warbird community that can finance and operate warbirds within the country. Very exciting development indeed.

Oliver Canon have sent a photo of the DFS 230 fuselage frame on view in Crete. Many thanks to you all for these contributions!

January 17 2003 For some time now I've tried to identify a fuselage frame that I took some photos of at Vesivehmaan Varastohalli, Lahti (storage facility of Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo, Tikkakoski) during my visit to Finland this summer. With the help of Timo Savolainen we've managed to confirm that the fuselage frame is in fact a Finnish VL Pyry II trainer which we believe to be PY-26. This aircraft hasn't been listed as preserved anywhere before to my knowledge. The identity is not confirmed so far (though on the photos I took "PY" and "Y-26" is seen stenciled on metal). When Timo checked with several people at Keski-Suomen Ilmailumuseo no one knew anything about it, but they came up with the idea that it's probably one of the Pyry's that was sold to a junk shop dealer in the 60's. This theory is supported by the fact that PY-26 was struck of charge in 1962 and very well could have been sold as scrap. Timo will make a visit during the summer and look for the ID plate which we now know where it was placed on the frame. This Pyry is not one of the other three preserved Pyrys since we've confirmed the whereabouts of them. Well, this "re-discovery" of the Pyry is the closest to making a discovery-of-an-old-aircraft-in-the-barn experience I've had so far! :-)

Brian Locket contributed information about and a photo of a Ford JB-2 (Fi 103) missile on display at Point Magu Naval Air Station, CA. This missile have not been listed on this site before.

January 11 2003 Thomas Breckner of the Travel Town Museum in Los Angeles reports that their Ford JB-2 missile have been transferred to USAF/Missile Heritage Center at Vandenberg AFB, CA.

Oliver Canon reports that a previously unlisted fuselage frame of a DFS 230 glider is preserved in a private War Museum on Krete. Oliver writes: This summer in Kreta,I visited a small war museum. At this place: WAR MUSEUM private collection, (George Andr.Hatzidakis ) adress: ASKIFOU SFAKIA in the direction of Sfakia sud west of the island ;Tel 0030 825 95289.This two rooms+Terrace is held by an old woman who doesn't speak English. On the terrace there is a DFS 230 rusted frame fuselage without doubt recovered in Tavronitis (Malemes area ). Look out for a photo soon!

A photo of a second aft fuselage from a Gloster Gamecock preserved in Finland have been added in the Finnish section. Photos of a radio operator seat and the rear cabin structure of Ju 88, preserved in Finland can be found under the Luftwaffe relics section. Also A better photo of the VL Viima II OH-VII have been added.

January 4 2003 It's amazing, whenever I think I'm out of photos for the next update, some new arrives!

During the last week Mike Walton added a photo of Bf109F-4 W.Nr 8993 now under restoration in Germany. Mario Raguž contributed an improved photo of the Bü 131 on view in Zagreb. Thomas Siepert sent some photos from a recent trip to Croatia and Germany. I've added an improved photo of the Focke-Wulf Fw 44 (D.A.R 9) on show in Zagreb, as well as a cockpit photo of the same aircraft.  Thomas also contributed improved photos of the Junkers Ju 52/3m, Messerschmitt Bf 108 (Nord 1002), Focke-Achgelis Fa 330, Klemm L 25 and the Fiesler Fi 103 on show at Deutsches Museum in Munich. Some engines from that museum have also been added; Argus As 8, BMW VI, BMW 003E, Sh 14 (BMW section),  Heinkel HS 3B (replica as the NASM example?),  Hirth 504A, Jumo 213 and Zündapp Z92. The last engine is quite unusual and was used in aircraft like Kl 105, Go 150, Bü 180 and Si 202B.

Henk Wadman writes in to inform that the Fw 44J c/n 2924 which left USA for The Netherlands will be registered as D-EJFW when the restoration is completed. It is also reported to be for sale. Many thanks to everyone for the contributions!
